This 75.5 ft. Catrina is the largest in the world and is displayed on the Malecón in Puerto Vallarta. The art piece was created for the city in celebration of the “Day of the Dead”. The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday celebrated for two days after Halloween. During November 1 and 2, the spirits are believed to return home and spend time with their relatives. Altars are erected all over the city decorated with pictures of the deceased, flowers, tequila, candles, perforated paper (allows souls to travel through) and favorite foods.
Catrina’s represent the cycle of life and death. With her elegant attire and distinctive skull makeup, she embodies the idea that death is an integral part of life, to be acknowledged and celebrated. There are contests to create the best catrinas.
